Mangalorean Fish Curry Masala

It is also called Meen Gassi or Mangalore Fish Curry or Konkan Curry is an authentic fish curry recipe of Mangalore. This fish curry is a perfect balance of spice, tang, and heat. It is quick, easy and surely satisfies your taste bud. This fish curry is cooked in specially roasted and ground spices, along with fresh coconut, further, making a well-balanced spicy coconut masala. Served with steaming hot rice, neer dosa, idli, and ragi ball. This is a curry that pleases the heart and soul!

One of the advantages of this fish curry is a quick meal recipe, at the same time highly nutritious, and low in calories.

How to make Mangalorean Fish Curry Masala:

For Masala Powder:

Firstly dry roast, Coriander seeds, cumin seeds, peppercorns, mustard seeds, fenugreek seeds, carom seeds, and red chilies. Once the spices are dry roasted, transfer them to another plate and allow them to cool down completely.
Then transfer dry roasted spices to a mixer jar, and then add in ginger and garlic.
Further add in chopped onions, fresh coconut, carom seeds, and tamarind. And then grind it into a smooth paste.

For making curry:

Heat a pan and add in oil, chopped onions, turmeric powder, and few curry leaves. Saute for 2 minutes.
Later add in ground masala paste, and give a mix.
Add in the required water and salt to taste. And then allow it to boil.
Further, add in fish and curry leaves(optional) and allow it to cook fish for 20 to 25 minutes or till the fish is completely cooked.
Finally, Fish Curry is ready to serve.

Ingredients

  • For Masala

  • 10 to 12 red chillies

  • 1 tbsp coriander seeds

  • 1 tsp cumin seeds

  • 10 peppercorns

  • 1/4 tsp mustard seeds

  • 1/8 tsp fenugreek seeds

  • A pinch of carom seeds (ajwain)

  • 10 cloves of garlic

  • 1/2 inch ginger

  • 1 tbsp Tamarind

  • 1/2 cup Fresh Coconut

  • 1 large onion, roughly chopped

  • For Curry
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder

  • 4 Cups water

  • Salt to taste

  • 1 big sized onion

  • Few Curry leaves

  • Coconut oil or any oil of your choice
