Palakura Pappu is also known as Palak Pappu (it means Spinach dal in Telugu). It is a popular Andhra Style special lentil dish cooked with palak or Indian spinach along with garlic, green chilies, onion, tomato, and finally, seasoned with oil or ghee, sliced onions, mustard seeds, and curry leaves.
Further, is a nutritious and protein-rich sambar recipe. It can be served with hot rice with ghee, ragi ball, and roti.
In this recipe, I have used a mixture of these dals like moong dal, chana dal, and toor dal. Or you can use any one of these days as per your choice.

Ingredients
1 Bunch Palak or Spinach
10 Garlic pods
1 Medium Onion
2 Medium Tomatoes
4 Green Chilies or as per taste
2 tbsp. cup Moong dal
1/4 cup Chana dal
1/4 cup Toor dal or Masoor dal
2 to 3 cups Water
Salt to taste
- Seasoning
2 tbsp. Oil
1 Small Onion
1/2 tsp Mustard seeds
1/4 tsp Cumin seeds
2 Dry red chilies
Few Curry leaves
Directions
- Firstly, clean and rinse the palak 3 to 4 times and keep it aside.
- Then heat a pressure cooker and add in water, dals, onion, garlic, green chilies, and tomato. And then close the lid and pressure cook it for 3 whistles.
- Strain it off with the help of a strainer.
- Smash it with a smasher or grind it into a smooth paste with the help of a mixer jar.
- Then add in salt and allow it to boil.
- Seasoning: Heat a pan and add in oil, sliced onions, mustard seeds, curry leaves, cumin seeds, and dry chilies.
- Transfer it to the boiling sambar. Boil for another 2 minutes and switch off the flame.
- Finally, Palakura Pappu is ready to serve.
Notes
- You can add any dal of your choice such as moong dal, toor dal, chana dal, masoor dal, avarebele etc. Or a mixer of dals.
- You can use red chili powder instead of green chilies.
- You can season it with ghee
