Tiffin Sambar

Tiffin Sambar is a traditional sambar recipe with step by step pictures and instructions are given below. Tiffin sambar is filled with flavors and spicy.  It is filled with flavors and protein rich sambar recipe. So, the ingredients used in this recipe are toor dal, split moong dal, onion, tomato, cumin seeds, green chilies, curry leaves, oil, salt to taste, water as required. We need to prepare sambar powder for this recipe, so the ingredients are toor dal, channa dal, red chilies, pepper corns, fenugreek seeds, curry leaves, cumin seeds, coriander seeds. If required we can also add in coconut too.

Tiffin sambar goes well with Pongal, Idli, Dosa. If required we can also add vegetables like beans, carrot, potatoes, pumpkin, brinjal etc. Adding ghee gives extra flavor to the sambar.

How to make Tiffin Sambar Recipe:

Firstly dry roast toor dal and moong dal for 2 minutes in low flame.

Then rinse the dals for 2 to 3 times. Later add in onions, tomatoes, green chilies, turmeric powder. Then close the lid and pressure cook for 3 to 4 whistles.

Meanwhile we can prepare toor dal, channa dal, red chilies, pepper corns, fenugreek seeds, curry leaves, cumin seeds, coriander seeds. Dry roast till slightly brown.

Allow it to cool down completely.

Transfer it into a mixer jar.

Ground them into a smooth powder and keep it aside.

After pressure cooking for 3 to 4 whistles. Add in salt to the cooked dala and smash the dal.

For Seasoning, heat a pan and add in oil, mustard seeds, cumin seeds, curry leaves, hing.

Once the sambar starts boiling add in the prepared seasoning.

At the end add in the prepared sambar powder. Mix well and cook for another 2 to 3 minutes and switch off the flame.

Tiffin Sambar is a traditional and healthy sambar recipe. It goes well with pongal, idli, dosa.

  • Pressure Cooker
  • Tadka pan
  • ½ cup Toor dal
  • ½ cup Moong dal
  • 1 Onion
  • 3 Small tomatoes
  • 6 Green chilies

Sambar Powder

  • 4 spoons Toor dal
  • 2 spoon Channa dal
  • 12 Red chilies
  • ¼ Pepper corns
  • 20 nos. Fenugreek seeds
  • 3 string Curry leaves
  • 1 tsp Cumin seeds
  • 2 spoon Coriander seeds
  1. Firstly dry roast toor dal, moong dal for 2 minutes in low flame. Then rinse the dal for 2 to 3 times.

  2. Then heat a pressure cooker and add in rised dal, water, onion, tomatoes, green chilies, turmeric powder, cumin seeds.

  3. Close the lid and pressure cook for 3 to 4 whistles.

  4. Meanwhile we can prepare sambar powder. For that heat a pan and dry roast toor dal, channa dal, red chilies, pepper corns, fenugreek seeds, curry leaves, cumin seeds, coriander seeds. Dry roast till brown. Then allow it cool down completely. Later ground them into a smooth powder.

  5. Once the dal is pressure cooked for 3 to 4 whistles. Smash the dal with the help of a smasher. Again allow it to boil.

  6. Later we need to prepare seasoning. Heat a pan and add in oil, mustard seeds, cumin seeds, curry leaves, hing.

  7. Once the sambar starts to boil add in salt to taste and tempering to it.

  8. Then add in prepared sambar powder, give a mix. Allow it boil for 2 to 3 minutes and switch off the flame.

  9. Finally the Tiffin sambar is ready to serve with pongal, idli, dosa.
