Traditional Ven Pongal or Kara Pongal

Ven Pongal is also known as Kara Pongal. Ven Pongal is a traditional South Indian rice recipe. Ven Pongal is one of the best and a healthy breakfast recipe, as it is packed with protein rice dish. To make it more healthy, we can use brown rice or millets. So, ven pongal goes well with Tiffin sambar, Coconut chutney, Peanut chutney. So, the ingredients used in this recipe are rice, moong dal, cashew nuts, green chili, ginger, salt to taste, oil, ghee, curry leaves, pepper corns, cumin seeds, water as required.

Ven pongal or kara pongal is one of the popular festive food recipe. Pongal can be served has a breakfast recipe, lunch recipe or even as a dinner too. Ven pongal, sweet pongal can be served during Navaratri festivals.

How to make Traditonal Ven Pongal Recipe:

Kara Pongal
Firstly heat a pan and dry roast rice, moong dal for 2 minutes.

 

Kara Pongal
Rinse rice and dal for 2 to 3 times and add in water, green chili, ginger, ghee, cumin seeds.

 

Kara ongal
Pressure cook for 3 whistles.

 

Kara Pongal
Heat a pan and add in oil or ghee, cumin seeds, cashew nuts, curry leaves, hing, crushed pepper corns, ginger.

 

Kara Pongal
Then add tempering to pongal and salt to taste. Mix well.

 

Ven Pongal
Finally the traditional and healthy ven pongal is ready to serve.

Ven Pongal is also known as Kara Pongal. Ven Pongal goes well with Tiffin Sambar, coconut chutney, peanut chutney. It is one of the best breakfast recipe.

  • Pan
  • Small Pan
  • 1 cup Rice
  • ½ cup Moong dal
  • 7 cups Water
  • 1 Green chilies
  • ½ tsp Cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp Ghee
  • ½ tsp Ginger
  • Salt to taste

Tempering

  • 1 tbsp Oil/ghee
  • ¼ tsp Crushed pepper corns
  • ½ tsp Cumin seeds
  • ¼ tsp Ginger finely chopped
  • 2 string Curry leaves
  • 8 to 10 Cashew nuts
  1. Firstly heat and pan and dry roast rice, moong dal. Rinse for 2 to 3 times.

  2. Then heat a pan and add in rinsed rice, moong dal, water, green chilies, ginger, cumin seeds. Then close the lid and pressure cook it for 3 to 4 whistles.

  3. Meanwhile we can prepare seasoning, for that heat a pan and add in oil or ghee, cumin seeds, crushed pepper corns, cumin seeds, ginger chopped, cashew nuts, curry leaves.

  4. Once the pressure is released, add in seasoning to the pongal and salt to taste.

  5. Finally the Ven pongal or Kara Pongal is ready to serve with tiffin sambar or chutney of your choice.
