SIMPLE TOMATO RASAM

Tomato Rasam is packed with rich dietary fibers, rasam is ideal for cold, flu, and weight loss. Rasam, a soup of spices, is a traditional South Indian food. It is traditionally prepared using tamarind juice as a base, with ripe tomatoes, freshly ground pepper powder, cumin, garlic, curry leaves, fenugreek seeds, mustard, dry red chilies, salt to taste, tamarind, oil, water as required, asafoetida, coriander seeds and coriander leaves for garnishing.

Rasam is far more watery and lighter than the sambar. Whereas sambar is cooked with dal and vegetables, so the texture will be a little thick and creamy due to dal.

We can have rasam daily to avoid the common cold and flu. Furthermore, we can have it with rice, and papad or it can be served separately as a soup.

Rasam is packed with antioxidants, helps to prevent acidity, helps to unwanted wastes from the stomach, and aid digestion. The important ingredient is pepper and garlic, which helps with digestion, the best home remedy for sore throat and cold during winter seasons. It is loaded with essential and minerals that are ideal for proper nutrition which helps to keep the body healthy, boosts immunity.

Rasam should not be boiled for too long because of the reactive ingredients like tamarind, lemon, and salt. There are a variety of rasams like garlic rasam, pepper rasam, and lemon rasam. Etc.,

Rasam gets its tangy taste from tomato, tamarind, and heat from spices. If the rasam becomes too tangy we can add little jaggery or water to balance the taste.

MYSORE RASAM/TOOR DAL RASAM

 

Tomato Rasam

Rasam is a most commonly prepared dish in South Indian homes. Rasam is rich in antioxidants that prevent the free radical activity. Most commonly it contains ingredients like cumin seeds, pepper seeds, tomatoes, tamarind, garlic, mustard and curry leaves. It is good for digestion and even for cold and cough.

  • 2 Medium Tomatoes
  • 1 tsp tamrind
  • 1 tbsp Coriander leaves
  • ½ tsp Turmeric powder
  • 1 tbsp Rasam powder
  • 1 tbsp Grated coconut
  • ¼ tsp Hing/Asafoetida
  • Salt (as per taste)

For Seasoning

  • 2 tsp Oil
  • 10 nos. Garlic cloves
  • 1 spring Curry leaves
  • 1 tsp Mustard seeds
  • 3 nos. Dry Chilli

Dry Roast

  • 1 tbsp Cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp Pepper corns
  • ¼ tsp Fenugreek seeds (Optional)
  1. Take all the ingredients



  2. Dry roast till light golden brown and allow it to cool down completely.



  3. Grind it into a smooth powder



  4. Take a pot and add water, tomatoes and little salt close the lid. Allow it to boil till the tomatoes are cooked.



  5. After the tomatoes are cooked add roasted and powdered spices, rasam powder tamrind pulp and turmeric powder



  6. Ground rasam powder.



  7. Pinch of turmeric powder



  8. For seasoning or tadka add oil, mustard seeds, cumin seeds, roughly mashed garlic, dry chilli, curry leaves and hing



  9. Now add the tadka or seasoning to the rasam. Pour required water according to rasam consistency and then check the salt and spices if required you can add know.



  10. Now the tomato rasam is ready to be served with hot boiled rice and ghee accomplished with papad or poriyal (palya).



  1. At the end you can add little jaggery to enhance the taste.
  2. It goes well with hot rice with ghee accomplished with papad or poriyal (palya).
