Soft Idly Recipe or Homemade Idly Batter Recipe or Idly dosa batter Idli is a healthy and popular breakfast food in South Indian and Sri lanka,  originating from the Indian Subcontinent. Usually Idlies are made by soaking rice, urad dal and fenugreek seeds and then grinding into a smooth paste, later fermenting the idli batter for 8 hours or overnight. Then it is ready to make soft idlies. So the ingredients used in this recipe are idli rice, urad dal, flatten rice, fenugreek seeds, salt and required water.
Idli has several variations, such as rava idli, which is made from semolina. ragi idli, suffed idlies, wheat idli, millet idli etc.
Best Servings: 
Since plain idlis are mild in taste, so idlies are often served with chutneys such as coconut chutney, peanut chutney, tomato chutney etc., sambar and medu vada, dry spice mixture podi is convenient while travelling.

How to make Idly batter at home or Soft Idly Recipe:

Firstly clean and soak idly rice for 6 to 8 hours or overrnight.

Then clean and soak urad dal, flatten rice and fenugreek seeds for 6 to 8 hours or overnight.

Firstly grind idly rice into a smooth batter by adding 1/2 cup of water.

Then transfer the grounded rice and urad batter into a large bowl.

Give a mix with the help of your clean hands, as that adds a little warmth to the batter.

Then cover the lid and place it in a warm place. And allow it to ferment it for 8 hours or overnight.

Here I have taken only half the idly batter and rest of the batter I have stored in air tight container and refrigerated, so that I can use it for next day for making dosa or idly(by doing this idly batter will stay fresh for 3 days). So for the half of the idly batter I am adding required salt and give a mix.

Firstly heat idly pan by adding 3/4 cup of water and allow it to boil.

Now grease the idly molds and pour in idly batter.

Then Place the idly mold inside the idly pan. Later close the lid and cook for 7 minutes.

To check idly is cooked or not. Take a fork and just insert it inside the idly, if it comes out clean then the idly is cooked.

Idly Recipe or Homemade Idly Recipe

Idly Recipe or Homemade Idly Recipe is a very popular breakfast recipe in South India. It goes well with chutney, sambar etc. of your choice.

  • Mixing bowl
  • Mixer jar
  • Idly maker
  • 2 cups Idly rice
  • 1 cup Urad dal
  • 1 tsp Fenugreek seeds
  • ⅓ cup Flatten rice
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • Water as required
  1. Firstly clean and soak idly rice in one bowl and urad dal, flatten rice and fenugreek seeds in another bowl.

  2. Allow it soak for 6 to 8 hours and then ground them into smooth paste. Firstly grind urad dal and then rice.

  3. Later transfer it into another bowl and give a mix with the help of your hands. Then close the lid and allow it ferment it for 8 hours or overnight.

  4. After fermentation add in salt and give a proper mix.

  5. Then heat little water in idly pan and grease the idly mold with oil and pour the idly batter and place the idly mold inside the idly maker and cook for 7 to 8 minutes.

  6. Finally unmold the idlys with the help of a spoon and serve hot with chutney or sambar of your choice.
