Kumbakonam Kadappa is a popular South Indian dish that originated in Kumbakonam, a town in the Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu, India. It is a flavorful and creamy side dish that is often served with dosa, idli, or chapati. The main ingredients for making Kumbakonam Kadappa include potatoes, moong dal (split yellow gram), and a variety of spices.

Ingredients

  • Moong dal 1/3 cup

  • Potatoes 2

  • Turmeric powder 1/4 tsp

  • Oil 2 tbsp.

  • Bay leaf 1

  • Cinnamon stick 1 inch

  • Cloves 2

  • Mustard seeds 1/2 tsp

  • Onion sliced

  • Few curry leaves

  • Ginger garlic paste 1/2 tsp

  • Tomato 1

  • Water 1/2 cup

  • For Grinding:
  • Fresh coconut 1/4 cup

  • Roasted chana dal 2 tbsp.

  • Green chilies 2

  • Fennel seeds 1/2 tsp

Directions

  • Heat a pan and add in little oil and moong dal. Sauté till the dal turns light brown and aromatic.
  • Add 3 cups of water, 2 potatoes and 1/4 tsp turmeric powder.
  • Close the lid and pressure cook it for 3 whistles.
  • Transfer potatoes to another plate.
  • Heat a pan add in oil, mustard seeds, cinnamon, bay leaf and cloves.
  • Later add in sliced onions, curry leaves and ginger, garlic paste and green chilies. Sauté till the raw smell goes away and onions turns golden brown.
  • Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they become soft and the oil starts to separate.
  • Now add in cooked potatoes, water and salt to taste.
  • Close the lid and allow it to cook.
  • For the paste: In a mixer jar add in fresh coconut, green chilies and roasted chana dal. Grind it into a smooth paste. And keep it aside.
  • Further, add in cooked moong dal and ground paste. Stir and cook for another 5-7 minutes until the flavors blend well.
  • Finally, garnish it with freshly chopped coriander leaves and Kumbakonam Kadappa is ready to be served. It pairs well with dosa, idli, or chapati.
