Pressure cook the toor dal or avarebele, onion, tomato, green chilies, garlic until it’s soft and mushy. You can add a pinch of turmeric powder and water to the dal while cooking. It has a unique and delicious flavor, combining the earthy taste of ridge gourd.
For a rich and creamy flavor you can add coconut paste or coconut milk.

Ingredients
1 Ridge gourd
2 tbsp. Oil
1/2 tsp Mustard seeds
1/4 tsp Cumin seeds
1 small Onion
1 medium Tomato
Pinch of turmeric powder
Pinch of hing
1/2 cup Toor dal or masoor dal
Few Curry leaves
4 to 5 Green chilies
6 to 8 Garlic pods
Salt to taste
3 cups of Water
Directions
- Firstly, heat a pan and add in oil, mustard seeds, cumin seeds, curry leaves and onion. Sauté for a 30 seconds.
- Then add in ridge gourd, green chilies, tomato, turmeric powder, and garlic pods.
- Later add in rinsed and soaked toor dal or masoor dal.
- Further, add in required water, salt to taste, pinch of hing.
- Then close the lid and pressure cook it for 4 to 5 whistles.
- After pressure cooking this how it looks.
- Mush it with the help of a musher into a smooth puree. And then cook for a 1 to 2 minutes. If required at this stage add in salt, red chili powder or green chilies of your choice.
- Finally, healthy and tasty Ridge gourd Masiyal is ready to serve.
