WHEAT UNNI APPAM 

It is one of the traditional and popular snacks in Kerala. In Malayalam Unni means small and appam means rice cake. Further it is also known as Karollappam. So, if there are any ripe bananas left over at home and wondering what to do, don’t worry just make this delicious and traditional wheat appam with leftover ripe bananas. Instead of bananas, we can use jackfruit too. Wheat Unniyappam or Wheat appam with step-by-step pictures and instructions are given below.

 

Unniyappam Pan:

There are variety of pan available in market or in online like, Cast iron, Non stick, Iron, Brass, Aluminium. I prefer using Iron or Cast iron pans, as it is healthy and reasonable too.

INGREDIENTS:

Wheat Unniappam is a small round snack made from whole wheat flour, jaggery, ripe banana, grated coconut, sesame seeds, poppy seeds, ghee or oil, and cardamom pods. Instead of bananas, we can use jackfruit too.

WHEAT UNNIYAPPAM

Wheat Unniyappam/Wheat Appam is one of the Kerala sweet recipe. It is very simple and tasty recipe. So, below is the step by step pictures and instructions are provided.

  • Mixing bowl
  • Pan
  • Appam pan
  • 1 cup Whole wheat flour
  • 2 Big ripe bananas
  • ½ cup Jaggery
  • ¼ cup Water(for melting jaggery)
  • ¼ cup Grated coconut
  • 1 tbsp Sesame seeds (White or black)
  • 1 tsp Cardamom Powder
  • Pinch of salt
  • ½ cup Oil
  • 2 tbsp Ghee
  • Water as required for batter
  1. Firstly smash the bananas or make a paste of the it using mixer grinder and keep it aside.

  2. Then heat a pan add in water and jaggery. Allow it melt, and then keep it aside.

  3. Now take a mixing bowl and add in wheat flour, pinch of salt, banana paste, mealted jaggery, grated coconut, cardamom powder, ghee, if required add water.

  4. Give a mix without any lumps and close the lid and allow it to rest for 20 to 30 minutes.

  5. Heat a appam pan and add in oil and prepared batter.

  6. Cook both the sides till golden brown on medium flame.

  7. Finally Wheat Unniyappam/Wheat Appam is ready to serve.
