Modakam or Modaka is a sweet recipe. Usually it is prepared during Ganesha festival as an offering to god. Ingredients used for staffing are grated coconuts(ತುರಿದ ತೆಂಗಿನಕಾಯಿ) , jaggery(ಬೆಲ್ಲ), cardamom powder(ಏಲಕ್ಕಿ ಪುಡಿ), pinch of salt(ಉಪ್ಪು), poppy seeds(ಗಸಗಸೆ) and in this recipe even I have also used freshly chopped dates and some tutti frutti also, but it is purely optional. To make the modakam more delicious and healthy even we can add some dry fruits also.

Ingredients used for making dough are rice flour, salt and some hot water.

Modakam or modaka can be prepared with the help of modaka mold or even with hands too.

Lord Ganesha is a god of beginnings. Modakam is one of the lord Ganesha’s most favorite sweet offered during Ganesha festival. Lord Ganesha is known by many attributes. Ganesha is widely revered as the remover of obstacles and lord of intellect and wisdom. Lord Ganesha is honoured at the start of rites and ceremonies. Sweets prepared during Ganesha festivals are modakam, kadubbu, obattu, brown channa sundal etc.

Modakam or Modaka

Modakam or modaka is a sweet recipe. It is a sweet dumplings prepared during Lord Ganesha festivals. It is one of the Ganesha's favorite sweet recipe.

For Modaka Stuffing

  • 2 Cups Coconuts (grated)
  • ¾ Cups Jaggery (Adjust according to your taste)
  • ½ tsp Cardamom Powder
  • 1 tbsp Tutti Frutti (Optional)
  • 3 Dates (chopped)
  • 2 tbsp Water

For Dough

  • 2 cups Rice Flour
  • 2 cups Water
  • ½ tsp Salt

For Making Dough

  1. Take a small pan and place it on the stove.

  2. Add in water, salt and rice flour. Give a gentle mix without lumps.

  3. Allow it to cool and make a small balls. Keep it aside.

For Stuffing

  1. Take a pan, add in required water and jaggery. Allow it to melt.

  2. Add in grated coconut, poppy seeds, cardamom powder. Give a mix.

  3. Allow it cool.

  4. With the help of modak mold, fristly grease the mold with some oil and add in the dough, make a space at the centre and add in required amount of coconut stuffing into the mold.(see the pictures below)

  5. Remove the modak from the mold. Now the healthy and tasty Modaka is ready to serve.

Take a deep pan and add in water, salt. Allow it boil.
