Khara Bath (Chow Chow Bhath) and Kesari Bath (Sweet Semolina Pudding) are popular South Indian dishes, especially in Karnataka. They are often served together as part of a breakfast or as a sweet treat during festivals.
Khara bath is a quick and simple dish made with semolina(rava), mix veggies, onions, curry leaves, mustard, chana and urad dal, oil. It is one of the most commonly found dish in South Indian restaurants and hotels, especially in Karnataka. Further, it is one of the easy to cook dish, you can add any vegetables of your choice like carrot, beans, peas etc.
But in this recipe I have made a plain version of khara bath. Feel free to customize the recipe by adding other vegetables or spices according to your preference. It goes well with coconut chutney.

Ingredients
- KHARA BATH
Roasted rava 1 cup
Onion 1 big
Green chilies 4 (add as per your spice level)
Oil 4 to 5 tbsp.
Mustard seeds 1/2 tsp
Cumin seeds 1/2 tsp
Chana dal 2 tsp
Urad dal 1 tsp
Curry leaves few
Salt to taste
Grated coconut 2 tbsp.
Hot water 3 cups
- KESARI BATH
Oil or ghee 4 tbsp.
Cloves 4
Raisins 10 to 15
Cashew nuts 10 to 15
Roasted Rava 1 cup
Turmeric powder 1/4 tsp
Sugar 1/2 cup (add as per your sweet level)
Cardamom powder 1/2 tsp
Hot water 3 cups
Directions
- KHARA BATH
- Heat a pan and add in oil, mustard seeds, cumin seeds, chana dal, urad dal, green chilies and curry leaves.
- Then add in chopped onions. Fry till the onions becomes translucent.
- Add in rava and give a mix.
- Give a mix and cook for 1 to 2 minutes under a low flame.
- Later add in hot water and salt to taste. Keep stirring without any lumps.
- Further, close the lid and allow it to cook.
- Add in grated coconut and give a mix.
- Finally, khara bath is ready to serve.
- KESARI BATH
- In a pan add in oil or ghee, cloves, dry grapes and cashew nuts. Fry till golden brown.
- Then add in roasted rava and give a mix.
- Further, add in turmeric powder and required water. Give a mix.
- Later add in cardamom powder and give a mix. Then close the lid and cook for 2 to 3 minutes under low flame.
- Add in fried dry grapes and cashew nuts. Finally, khara bath and kesari bath is ready to serve.
