Karnataka Special Soppu Bassaru | How to make Soppu Bassaru is one of the authentic, famous Karnataka special recipe with step by step pictures and instructions are given below, hope you all like it and give a try. It is one of traditional recipes of Karnataka, and my most favorite dish. This Soppu Bassaru goes well with ragi ball and hot rice.
So, for making bassaru we can use different types of dals and leafy vegetables like toor dal, masoor dal, avarebele, green gram, red lobia etc and lefy vegetables like amaranthus (dhantina soppu), dill leaves (sabsige soppu), drumstick leaves, arai keerai, chelakeerae soppu, geerakasaale, kempu dantu soppu etc.
Ingredients:
Toor dal, masoor dal (optional), fresh lobia, green gram, arai keerai, onion, oil, salt to taste, water as required, pinch of turmeric powder, hing, grated coconut, mustard seeds. For grinding we need tamarind, onion, garlic, red chili powder, cooked dal, pepper corns, cumin seeds, coconuts, curry leaves.
Methods:
How to make Healthy Soppu Bassaru Recipe:
- Firstly rinse leafy vegetables 3 to 4 times, cut it into small pieces and keep it aside.
- Then boil water and add in soaked green gram and allow it to cook.
- Once the green gram is 70 percent cooked, then add in soaked toor dal, masoor dal, led lobia (we can use any dal of your choice). Then allow it to cook.
- Once the dal and leafy vegetable is cooked completely. Drain off the cooked water in another pot.
For making Soppu Bassaru Sambar:
- Now heat a small pan and add in onion, garlic, few curry leaves, pepper corn, cumin seeds, fenugreek seeds. Saute till the onions and garlic grown light brown or for 2 to 3 minutes.
- Now take a mixer jar and add in fried ingredients, little amount of cooked dal, tamarind, chili powder. Ground it into a smooth paste.
- Now add in grounded masala paste to the drained dal water.Give a mix without any lumps.
- For seasoning heat a pan and add in oil, mustard seeds, curry leaves. Once the sambar starts boiling add in the prepared tadka to the sambar.
- Add in salt to taste and then allow it boil.
- Finally the healthy Soppu bassaru ready to serve.
How to make Soppu Bassaru Palya or Side dish:
- Cooked, drained dal and leafy vegetable.
- Now heat a pan and add in oil, crushed garlic. Saute till the garlic becomes brown.
- Then add in chopped onions, curry leaves, red chili powder, turmeric powder, salt to taste. Saute it for 2 minutes in low flame.
- Then add in cooked dal and leafy vegetable to the prepared seasoning pan and give a mix.
- Now add in the grated coconuts and give a mix and switch off the flame.
- Finally the healthy Soppu Bassaru Palya or side dish is ready to serve.

This Soppu Bassaru goes well with ragi ball and hot rice.
- Pots
- Seasoning pan
- Mixer jar
- Drainer
- 2 bunch of Arai keerai
- ½ cup Green gram
- ⅓ cup Toor dal or Masoor dal
- ¼ cup Fresh red lobia
- Salt to taste
- 4 cups Water
- Pinch of turmeric powder
- Pinch of high
For grinding
- 1 small Onion
- 6 to 7 Garlic pods
- Little tamarind
- 1 tsp Cumin seeds
- ⅛ tsp Pepper corns
- 8 to 10 Fenugreek seeds
- ½ tsp Oil
- Few curry leaves
For making Side dish
- 1 Big onion chopped
- 10 to 15 Crushed garlic
- 2 tbsp Oil
- Few curry leaves
- Pinch of turmeric powder
- ½ tsp Red chili powder (Adjust as per requirement)
- Salt to taste
For Seasoning
- 1 tsp Oil
- ½ tsp Mustard seeds
- Few curry leaves
- Pinch of Hing
