Healthy Rajma Biryani/ Rajma Rice/ Rajma Pulao

Rajma or red kidney beans is a popular vegetarian dish, originating from the sub continent, it is a part of regular diet in Northern India. Rajma biryani is a healthy and tasty biryani recipe. Rajma is rich in protein. It is prepared as same as vegetable pulao, vegetable biryani. So, to prepare rajma biryani first of all we need to soak the rajma overnight. Then after soaking drain off the water and pressure cook rajma for 4 whistles. Then start preparing biryani. So, the ingredients used in this recipe are very handy and readily available at home and are soaked and pressure cooked rajma, basmati rice, onions, tomatoes, chilies, mint leaves, coriander leaves, methi leaves or kasuri methi, turmeric powder, chili powder, coriander powder, biryani powder, kashmiri chili powder, Cloves, cardamom, cinnamom sticks, fennel seeds, star anise, oil, ghee, water. It goes well with onion raita, or any other raita of your choice or with some gravies or curries of your choice.

One tip I would like to share is that, if you forgot to soak Rajma or red kidney beans overnight then more think you can do, that is take some hot water and soak the rajma for at least 2 hours then the Rajma is ready to pressure cook. Be careful while pressure cooking Rajma, if it is over cooked then it will become very soft and you cannot make biryani out of it, so be careful while cooking Rajma.

Healthy Rajma Biryani or Rajma Pulao

Rajma biryani or Rajma Pulao or Red Kidney beans biryani is a protein rich biryani recipe, it goes well with onion raita or with some gravy of your choice.

  • 1 cup Soaked and cooked Rajma
  • 2½ cup Basmati Rice
  • 2 Freshly chopped large Onions
  • 3 Freshly chopped Tomatoes
  • ½ cup Mint leaves
  • ¼ cup Coriander leaves
  • 5 Dry red chilies or green chilies
  • 1 tbsp Ginger garlic paste
  • 1 tsp Coriander powder
  • ¼ tsp Chili powder
  • 1 tsp Biryani powder
  • 1 tsp Kashmiri Chili powder
  • ⅛ tsp Turmeric Powder
  • 1 to 2 Cloves, Cardomum, Cinnamon Sticks and Bay leaf
  • ½ tsp Fennel seeds
  • 1 Star Anise
  • 1 tbsp Kasuri methi
  • few Curry leaves
  • 1 tbsp Ghee
  • Salt (As per taste)
  • 3½ Water
  1. Soak Rajma overnight .

  2. After soaking drain off the water and pressure cook Rajma for 4 whistles.

  3. Soak basmati rice for 30 minutes

  4. Take a large bottom pan and add in oil, all spices, chopped onions, ginger garlic paste, tomatoes, green or red chilies.

  5. Add in all spice powders.

  6. Add in chopped mint and coriander leaves.

  7. Add in soaked basmati rice, water and salt as per taste.

  8. Add in ghee, lemon juice (optional), Kasuri methi.

  9. Then close the lid and cook for 30 mniutes in low flame.

  10. Rajma Biryani or Rajma Pulao is ready to serve with onion raita.
