Bhindi Masala or Okra Gravy

Ladies finger is also known as bhindi or okra. Bhindi Masal is a gravy recipe, it goes well with cooked rice, chapati, poori and even with dosa. It is very easy to make with minimal ingredients. Ingredients used in this recipe are fresh ladies fingers, onions, tomato, chili powder, coriander powder, oil, mustard seeds, roasted channa paste (for thickening), chopped coconuts, curry leaves, coriander leaves, dill leaves, salt as per taste. I learned this recipe from my mom, I use to have it with chapati, steamed rice or sometimes with ragi balls.

Ladies finger is a type of green vegetable, long finger like, having a small round like white seeds in it. Ladies fingers are rich in fiber content, helps in digestion.

Ladies Finger Masala Gravy or Bhindi Gravy or Okra Masal

Ladies finger or bhindi or okra masala gravy is a simple gravy recipe, it goes well with rice, chapati.

  • 1/2 kg Fresh Ladies Finger or Okra or Bhindi
  • 2 Onions
  • 1 Tomato
  • ¼ cup Chopped Coconuts
  • ¼ tsp Chili Powder
  • ¼ tsp Coriander Powder
  • 2 tbsp Roasted Channa Paste
  • 2 tsp Oil
  • 2 Spring Curry leaves
  • 1 Cloves, Cardomum, Cinnamon Sticks
  • 1/2 inch Ginger
  • 7 to 8 Garlic cloves
  • ⅛ tsp Mustard seeds
  • Salt (As per taste)
  • Water (As required)
  • Coriander leaves (For Garnishing)
  1. Take a pan add in 1 tsp oil, and add in freshly chopped okra and fry till the stickiness goes. ( 5 to 7 minutes). After frying keep it aside.

  2. Take a mixer jar and add in onion, chopped coconuts, roasted channa, ginger garlic, cardamom, cinnamon, chili powder, coriander powder. Grind and make a paste of it.

  3. Take another pan and add in oil, mustard seeds, chopped onion, curry leaves. Fry for a minute.

  4. Add in grounded paste, required water and salt as per taste. Allow it to boil.

  5. Add in fried okra and close the lid and cook for 3 minutes.

  6. Garnish it with coriander or dill leaves.

Close the lid and cook till the raw smell goes and starts boiling
