Egg Dum Biryani is a simple and tasty biryani recipe with the ingredients available at home. Ingredients used in this recipe are boiled eggs, chopped onion, chopped tomatoes, green chili, red chili powder, coriander powder, biryani powder, turmeric powder, salt, ginger garlic paste, freshly chopped mint leaves, freshly chopped coriander leaves, oil, water, basmati rice. For garnishing I have used fried cashew nuts and raisins. To make it more rich even you can fry the dry fruits in ghee or butter. It gives more flavor and richness to the dish. At the end milk mixed with saffron on the top of the biryani, it given nice color and flavor to the dish.
For preparing Egg dum biryani first we should boil the egg and keep it aside, then the basmati rice should be cleaned and cooked till 70 percent and 30 percent should be cooked in dum along with eggs and gravy. So, it is really easy to prepare. First time even I felt difficult to prepare dum biryani after preparing for 2 to 3 times, now it became easy for me. So, practice or experience makes perfect.
When compare to other chicken biryani, mutton biryani, fish biryani or even prawns biryani egg biryani is light and less calorie, it is very simple and easy to prepare. It goes well with any raita of your choice, I usually prepare onion raita. Even it goes well with salna, gravies too.

Beginners Egg Dum Biryani
Egg Dum Biryani is a simple and tasty biryani recipe, it goes well with onion raita, gravies.
- 5 Boiled Eggs
- 3 cups Basmati Rice
- 2 Big Onion Chopped
- 3 Chopped Tomatoes
- ½ cup Mint Leaves chopped
- ½ cup Coriander leaves chopped
- 2 tbsp Ginger Garlic paste
- 3 tbsp Oil
- 6 Green Chili
- ½ tsp Red chili powder
- 1 tsp Coriander powder
- ½ tsp 1Kashmiri Chili Powder
- ½ tsp Biryani powder or Garam Masala powder
- ¼ tsp Turmeric powder
- 8 Fried Cashew nuts and Raisins (Garnishing)
- 2 to 3 Cloves, Cardomum, Cinnamon Sticks and Bay leaf
- ¼ tsp Fennel seeds
- Salt (As per taste)
- Water (As required)
- Ghee (Optional)
- 2 tbsp Saffron Milk (Optional)
- 1 tbsp Kasuri methi (Optional)
Take a pan and add in cleaned basmati rice, cloves, cardamom, cinnamom sticks, fennel seeds, bay leaves, little oil, salt as per taste and water as required. Cook till 70 percent and drain off the water and keep it aside.
Take a pan and add in oil and all the spice powders, salt and boiled eggs and fry for 2 minutes in low flame without buring the spices and eggs. So, keep stirring to avoid burning.
Take a pan add in oil, Spices (optional) has we added in rice also.
Add in chopped oinions, fry till golden brown.
Add in ginger garlic paste, cook till raw smell goes.
Add in chopped tomatoes and cook for 3 minutes in low flame.
Add in half of chopped mint leaves and coriander leaves.
Add in fried eggs and if required add extra spices according to your spice level and salt as per taste.
Now the gravy is ready.
Take a large bottom pan and in oil, some gravy one layer and add in some cooked rice one layer, again add some gravy along with eggs, and add some mint and corinader leaves. Likewise follow the same step and make another layer.
After making layers of rice, gravy. Now garnish it with some fried cashew nuts, raisins and saffron milk. Close the lid.
Now place the tawa on the stove. On top of the tawa place the biryani pan and cook for 10 minutes in low flame.
Now the yummy Egg dum biryani is ready to serve with onion raita.
- Same process can be used for making chicken biryani , mutton biryani and even for vegetable dum biryani.
