Banana flower or vazhaipoo palya or poriyal or podimas is a very nutritious side dish recipe. Banana flowers (a.k.a.banana blossoms) are, as the name suggests, the blossoms from a banana tree. Left on the tree, they would blossom into bananas. Like bananas, they are also edible.
Ingredients used in this recipe are fresh banana flower or vazhaipoo, chopped onions, grated coconuts, samber powder, mustard seeds, chana dal, urad dal, curry leaves, garnish it with coriander leaves, oil, salt as per taste.
They don’t so much taste like a banana as like something that will grow into a banana. They have a similar aromatic profile, but it’s much more delicate and much less banana like when still in the blossom form.
Banana flower are simply freshest specimens can be simply chopped and used in salads. You can add it salads, simple dressing, stir fry, soups, Poriyals or palya.
Banana flowers can be used as green vegetables as they cook quickly. Note that banana flower leaves will turn brown or black if left to sit exposed to air for long time, so don’t peel off that outer layer until you’re ready to use them.
To avoid browning of the flower: put them in a bowl of water, add Turmeric powder, lemon juice as soon as you chop them.

Banana Flower / Vazhaipoo Palya or Poriyal or Podimas
It is a healthy and tasty recipe. It cooks really fast. It has many nutritional values.
- 1 Vazhaipoo
- 1 Onion
- ¼ Cup Grated Coconut
- 1 tsp Samber Powder
- 1 tsp Channa dal
- 1 tsp Urad dal
- 1 tbsp Oil
- 2 Spring Curry leaves
- 1 tbsp Coriander leaves chopped
Take a Banana Flower
Remove it.
Separate the edible flower.
Immerse in water.
Chop them and immerse in water.
For Cooking
Take a pan add in oil, onion, mustard seeds, channa and urad dal, samber powder and curry leaves.
Add in Chopped banana flower. Close the lid and cook for 10 minutes in low flame.
Add in grated coconut and chopped coriander leaves.
Banana flower podimas or poriyal or palya is ready to serve.

- Add jaggery or sugar if it tastes bitter.
