Dal Tovve or Dal Toyi Recipe

Dal tovve or dal toyi recipe is a authentic and traditional recipe prepared during festivals and special occasions. Dal tovve is a traditional Karnataka recipe. Dal tovve is a curry or samber recipe. It goes well with hot rice along with ghee and papad. Tovve or toyi can be prepared with other vegetables too. Tovve in kannada basically means dal and huli.

How to make Dal Tovve or Dal Toyi Recipe:

Thoran
Firstly soak toor dal for half an hour.

Take a pan and add in water, soaked dal, and allow it cook.

Add in turmeric powder.

Add in oil.

Add in chopped tomatoes.

Add in green chilies.

Add in chopped onions.

Add in smashed ginger.

Add in salt to taste.

Heat a pan and add in oil, mustard seeds, cumin seeds, hing, curry leaves, dry chilies. Allow it to splutter.

Add in the prepared seasoning to the samber.

Finally squeeze some lemon juice and give a mix.

If required add in chili powder and salt.

Now add in little jaggery to enhance the taste of the samber.

Dal Tovve or Dal Toyi Recipe

Dal Tovve or Dal Toyi Recipe is a traditional Karnataka special samber recipe. It goes well with hot rice, ghee and papad.

  • Pan
  • ⅓ cup Toor dal
  • 1 Onion
  • 1 Tomato
  • 3 to 4 Green chilies
  • ½ inch Ginger
  • Pinch of turmeric powder
  • ½ tsp Chili powder (Optional)
  • 1 tsp Lemon juice
  • Pinch of hing
  • 1 tbsp Oil
  • ¼ tsp Cumin seeds
  • ¼ tsp Mustard seeds
  • 2 Dry red chilies
  • Few curry leaves
  • ½ tsp Jaggery
  • Salt to taste
  1. Firstly soak the toor dal for half an hour.

  2. Heat a pan and add in water and toor dal. Allow it cook.

  3. Then add in chopped onions, tomatoes, green chilies, crushed ginger, turmeric powder and salt to taste.

  4. Squeeze some lemon juice.

  5. Then prepare seasoning. Heat a pan and add in oil, cumin seeds, mustard seeds, curry leaves, dry red chilies, hing.

  6. Now add in prepared seasoning to the boiling samber. Give a mix.

  7. Finally add in little jaggery and if required add in chili powder and salt to taste.

  8. Now the Dal tovve or dal toyi is ready to serve.
