Andhra style pappu saru or tomato pappu is a famour Andhra recipe, it is a protein rich recipe. It goes well with hot cook rice, ragi ball, chapati or roti and even with dosa and idly too. It is one of my favorite recipe. I like to have it with hot cooked rice along with ghee and papad or with fish fry.
So, the ingredients used in this recipe are easily available at home, like, toor dal, sliced onions, sliced tomatoes, green chilies, crashed garlic, cumin seeds, mustard seeds, oil, chili powder, coriander leaves, turmeric powder, asafoetida, water as required, salt as per taste.

Take a pressure cooker and add in cleanly washed toor dal, turmeric powder, red chili powder, required water and pressure cook for 4 whistles. Whisk it with help of whisk and keep it aside. Take a small bowl and soak lemon sized tamarind in water and keep it aside. Now take another pan and prepare tadka i.e., seasoning for that add in oil, mustard seeds, cumin seeds, sliced onions and sliced tomatoes, green chilies, and pinch of asfoetida. Now add in the prepared seasoning and soaked tamarind pulp to the pressure cooked dal and cook till it boils. Now taste the pappu and add in required salt and spicy (adjust according to your consistency).

Andhra Style Pappu Saru

Pappu saru is a very healthy and tasty recipe, it goes well with cooked rice, chapati, roti, dosa and even with idly and ragi balls.
- ½ Cup Toor dal
- 1 Sliced big onion
- 1 Sliced Tomatoes
- 5 to 6 Crushed Garlics
- ½ tsp Red Chili Powder
- 7 to 8 Green Chilies (According to your spice level)
- pinch Turmeric Powder
- Lemon size Tamarind pulp
- 2 to 3 tbsp Oil
- ⅛ tsp Mustard seeds
- ⅛ tsp Cumin seeds
- Curry leaves
- Pinch Asafoetida
- Salt (As per taste)
- Water (As required)
Take a pressure cooker and add in washed toor dal, red chili powder, turmeric powder, salt. Pressure cook for 4 whistles.
After pressure cooking whisk it and keep it aside.
Take a small bowl and soak tamarind. Keep it aside.
Take a pan and season it with oil, mustard seeds, cumin seeds, sliced onions, sliced tomatoes, green chilies, curry leaves, asafeotida.
Now add in the seasoning to the pressure cooked dal and add in tamarind pulp.Give a mix. Cook till it boils.
Now check the salt and spice level and adjust according to your consistency.
Now the healthy and tasty Pappu saru is ready to serve.
