Soft Appam Recipe without Yeast is a healthy and tasty breakfast recipe with step by step pictures and instructions are given below. Appam is a type of pancake, originating from South India, made with fermented rice batter. Appam is common in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and many other southern states in India. It is eaten most frequently for breakfast or dinner. It goes well with coconut chutney, stew, curries of your choice.

There are varieties of Appams such as, plain appam, egg appam, idiyappam, achappam, kuzhalappam, neyyappam, pesaha appam, vattayappam.

Idly rice, urad dal, cooked rice, water, salt.

Methods:

How to make Appam Recipe without Yeast:

  1. Firstly take a bowl and add in idly rice, urad dal. Rinse it for 3 to 4 times and allow it to soak for 4 to 6 hours.
  2. Then take a mixer jar and add in soaked rice, urad dal and cooked rice. Grind it into a smooth paste.
  3. Then take a small bowl and add in 2 to 3 tbsp of ground batter and water. Give a mix and allow it to cook on a low flame.
  4. Keep stirring without any lumps and cook till it becomes a thick like paste.
  5. Later add in the prepared paste to the grounded appam batter.
  6. Give a mix without any lumps. Then close the lid and allow it to ferment it for overnight or 8 to 10 hours.
  7. Fermented Appam Batter is ready.Then add in required salt and give a mix.
  8. Then heat a appam pan, add some oil and spread the appam batter into the hot pan. Then turn and tilt the pan in circular motion, so as to spread the batter into a circle shape. Then reduce the flame to low flame.
  9. Then close the lid and cook in a low flame for 2 to 3 minutes or the appam becomes light golden crisp at the end and soft, fluffy at the center.
