Horse gram/ Hurulikalu Basaru

Horse gram Sambar or Ulavacharu Recipe (An authentic Andhra Recipe) or Soup Recipe, Ulavalu in Telugu and Kollu in Tamil is a healthy and tasty South Indian Recipe with step by step pictures and instructions are given below. It is a protein rich, low fat, fiber rich and helps to reduce obesity. It is made with horse gram and with some spices. It is a thick, tangy and spicy soup recipe. This soup is good for cold and cough as the horse gram is heat in nature.

Horse gram is one of the lesser known beans. You may be familiar with red, black and green grams, but even the most passionate foodies sometimes miss horse gram. However , you can call it Kollu as it is in Tamil, Hurulikalu in Kannada, Ulavalu in Teluguand and Kulthi in Hindi.

Horse gram is the most protein rich lentil found on the planet. It is very high powered. This is the staple food for horses. Which is called horse gram in the market.

Hurulikalu basaru is a healthy and tasty recipe. It is high in Iron, calcium, and protein. Low in fat and high in carbohydrate content.

After pressure cooking the horse gram drain off the excess water in other container for making sambar or soup or rasam.

Hurulikalu or Horse gram Basaru

It is the healthy and tasty recipe. It is good to have when we have cold or cough.

  • 2 Cups Horse Gram (soaked)
  • 1 nos. Big Onion
  • 1 tbsp Coconut chopped
  • 9 Cloves Garlic
  • 5 nos. Pepper corns
  • 1 tsp Cumin seeds
  • 1 to 2 tsp Tamarind Juice/Pulp
  • 3 tsp Samber Powder
  • ½ tsp Mustard Seeds
  • 2 Spring Curry leaves
  • 1 tsp Oil
  • 1 tbsp Ccoriander leaves (Garnishing)
  • Salt (As per taste)
  1. Firstly Soak the Horse gram over night or atleast 3 to 4 hours and pressure cook for 4 to 5 whistle.



  2. Drain the water and keep it aside for later use.



  3. Dry roast Onion, Garlic, Cumin seeds, Mustard seeds and Coconuts Chopped.



  4. Grind the dry roasted ingredients along with 2 tbsp boiled horse gram, Coriander leaves, Tamarind pulp and samber powder.



  5. Make a paste and add it to the strained horse gram water.



  6. Prepare seasoning.



  7. Add seasoning to the boiling samber.



  8. Horse gram or Hurulikalu Basaru is ready to serve with stemed rice or ragi ball.



  1. You can make Sundal or Palya out of remaining boiled Horse Grams as a side dish.
