Andhra Style Tomato Pappu

Andhra Style Tomato Pappu is a authentic and famous recipe of Andhra Pradesh.  It is one of the basic lentil base dish from Andhra Cuisine. In this recipe I have taken both massor dal and toor dal for preparing this recipe. Tomato pappu is slightly similar to dal fry, pappu saaru etc. An Andhra meal is not complete without this healthy tomato pappu. So, the ingredients used in this recipe are ripe tomatoes, onions, garlics, green chilies, cumin seeds, mustard seeds, oil, curry leaves, salt to taste, tamarind, water as required, turmeric powder, ghee.

Best Combo:

Tomato Pappu + hot rice + Ghee + Pappad.

Tomato Pappu + Pulka or Chapati.

Tomato Pappu + Idli or Dosa.

Tomato Pappu + Ragi ball.

How to make Andhra Style Tomato Pappu:

Tomato Poppu
Firstly take a pressure cooker and add in Masoor dal and toor dal.

Wash dals for 2 to 3 times.

Add in required water, onions, green chilies, turmeric powder, red chili powder and salt to taste.

Pressure cook it for 4 to 5 whistles.

After pressure cooking strain off the excess dal water and keep it aside.

Dal Water.

Smash them with the help of smasher.

Now add in the strained dal water to the smashed dal.

Now for preparing seasoning heat a pan add in oil, mustard seeds, garlic, red chilies, cumin seeds, hing.

Add in prepared seasoning to the dal and boil for 5 minutes and serve hot with rice.

Equipment

  • Pressure Cooker
  • Smasher

Ingredients
  

  • ½ cup Toor dal
  • ½ cup Masoor dal
  • 1 big Onion
  • 1 tbsp Tamarind juice
  • 4 medium Tomatoes
  • 6 Green chilies as per your spicy level
  • tsp Turmeric powder
  • ½ tsp Red chili powder
  • 3 cups Water
  • 1 tsp Ghee Optional
  • Salt as per taste

Seasoning

  • 1 tbsp Oil
  • 4 Red chilies
  • 2 string Curry leaves
  • 10 cloves Crushed garlic
  • ½ tsp Mustard seeds
  • ½ tsp Cumin seeds
  • Hing

Instructions
 

  • Firstly wash dal and keep it aside.
  • Now take a pressure cooker and add in dal required water, onions, chilies, turmeric powder, red chili powder, tomatoes, salt to taste.
  • Pressure cook it for 5 whistles.
  • Now strain off the excess dal water and smash the tomato dals with the smasher to a smooth taste.
  • Now prepare the seasoning by adding the above given ingredients.
  • And then add in the prepared seasoning to the smashed dal and again cook for 5 minutes.
  • Finally the Andhra Style Tomato dal is ready to serve with rice, idly or dosa of your choice.
